Update: Change in Field of Study Requirements for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
June 25, 2025
To qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), students enrolled in non-degree programs (including diplomas, certificates, and associate-level studies) must now complete a program in a field of study that is aligned with Canada’s long-term labour market needs. Today, IRCC released an updated list of eligible fields of study to reflect the 2025 Express Entry priorities. Notable changes include:
- 119 new fields added, with a strong focus on:
- Health care and social services
- Early childhood education and teaching
- Skilled trades and vocational training
- 178 fields removed that are no longer aligned with jobs identified as having long-term shortages.
As a result of these revisions, there are now a total of 920 eligible fields of study for PGWP purposes under this policy.
Transitional Provisions:
Students who applied for a study permit before June 25, 2025, remain eligible for a PGWP based on the list in effect at the time of their application, even if their program has since been removed from the updated list.
Important Notes:
- This policy does not apply to students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees, who remain eligible for PGWPs regardless of field of study.
- The list of eligible fields is based on the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) system.
