What Level of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Do You Need for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?
If you’re an international student planning to stay and work in Canada after completing your studies, understanding the language requirements for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is crucial. The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) are Canada’s national standards to assess English and French language proficiency, respectively.
Here’s a breakdown of the required CLB/NCLC levels based on your educational background:
🎓 University Graduates (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral Degrees)
To be eligible for a PGWP, you must demonstrate proficiency in:
- CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French across all four language areas.
This applies to all four language abilities: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
🏛️ Graduates of Other University Programs
Similar to degree holders, graduates from non-degree university programs are also required to meet:
- CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French across all four language areas.
🏫 College, Polytechnic, or Non-University Program Graduates
If your studies were completed at a college or polytechnic institution, the language threshold is slightly lower:
- CLB 5 in English or NCLC 5 in French in all four skill areas.
✈️ Flight School Graduates
Unique to aviation, graduates from PGWP-eligible flight schools do not face any language or field of study requirements if they meet either of the following:
- Have completed a flight training program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and now hold a Canadian commercial pilot’s license, or
- Have or are getting an instructor’s rating and have a job offer as a flight instructor from a DLI flight training centre
Final Thoughts
While language proficiency is a key factor in most PGWP applications, exemptions do exist, especially for specialized fields like aviation. Always refer to the latest guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to ensure you meet all current requirements.
